Glover Nursery Winter Watering

Gardeners talk about winter-kill or winter damage every year to describe plant loss that happens over the winter. Many times this damage is not due to cold temperatures alone, but a combination of cold and drought. We are experiencing an extremely dry winter this year. Although we had some snow in early January, it is not enough to sustain most plants through the winter.

You can improve the survival rate of your landscape plants by watering in the winter time. If the weather has been dry and the ground is not frozen, (watering frozen ground is not very effective), hook up your hose or use buckets to soak all of the trees, shrubs and perennials with water. Water once a month during a dry winter and less often when snow is plentiful. Pay special attention to plants that have been in the ground less than 4 or 5 years as they have smaller root systems and cannot absorb water as quickly as more establishes plants. Plants that retain their leaves or needles through the winter require more frequent watering than deciduous plants. A little attention paid to your landscape now will bring great results in the
spring.
